Faribault Bowling Observer- If I ruled the bowling world

First of all, Merry Christmas for those of us here at Faribault Bowling Observer. As I'm writing this, it is Christmas afternoon and I'm sure most of you have already unwrapped your presents. I hope everyone got what they wanted whether it's a new bowling shirt with your name in cursive on the back. Is that a thing anymore? A new ball dropped onto your lap forcibly like what happened to Mr. Parker in A Christmas Story, "Well, it's a blue ball, oh it's a bowling ball". Or in my case, bowling shoe covers or as I called them, bowling shoe condoms.

A friend of mine and I stay in touch throughout the bowling season. He bowls at Flaherty's in the Metro. We were both struggling to find a consistent third game earlier this season. We are both baseball fans and the idea came to us. Pitchers often throw well for the first six innings of a game. But often in the 7th inning on, start to tire. That's when teams go to the bullpen to get a fresh arm into the game. Our thought is that bowling teams should have a bullpen. Have an extra bowler or two that you can warm up and bring into the game when a bowler begins to struggle.

Every one that bowls for a while knows the frustration that comes when you are bowling well, but the other team is on a roll. There is nothing you can do about it. It is the worst feeling. One night our team on Wednesday night were on the wrong end of that. Then the thought came to me, I wish we could make like hockey and start a fight. A way of taking your opponent out of their game and firing up your own team. On the opposite end of that is that bowling teams would feel like they had to have a bowler on their team that maybe couldn't necessarily bowl well but could protect the rest of the team.

Regardless of any pratfalls, if I ran the bowling world there would be teams that would have bullpen bowlers and team goons.

Onto the bowling,

I leave you this week with one of the most viral moments in the history of bowling, the day when the line "who do you think you are, I am" became legendary as Pete Weber won the 2012 U.S. Open. I was not watching bowling at the time. The St. Paul Saints turned that line into a T-Shirt that Summer and I had to do some digging to find out exactly what that meant.

Until next time, good luck and good shooting.
