It's that time of year again. Thanksgiving and Christmas along with the busy times that come with it have come and gone. The Vikings have crashed and burned once again. Spring time is seemingly a very long way down the road. It's called the dead of Winter for a reason. But like a glimmer of light at a long dark tunnel, there is something to look forward to. The 72nd Faribault City Tournament is coming up on the week of February 6th through the 12th. Teams and bowlers will be competing in four and five bowler team competition, singles and doubles, and all events.
I know you may be reading that and think, I don't have a chance. I read all of those recaps with the bowlers who hit high series every week. Well, it's a handicap tournament and I can tell you from success in tournaments many years ago, all your team or you as an individual need is a hot night or two and it is very possible to at least finish in the money.
I remember in its hey day, the Faribault City Bowling tournament would fill both bowling alleys. The men's tournament at one alley and the women's at the other with sites alternating every season. As a teenage bowler it was a pretty fun and lucrative gig to get the chance to be a scorekeeper at Johnson's (no automatic scoring) as bowlers would tip very well.
As an adult it became a week you circled on your calendar. Among bowlers it was referred to as "Bowling City", you didn't have to say tournament, everyone knew what you were referring to. I can remember bowling singles and doubles on second shift on a Friday night. After pregaming drinking some purple passion, I had just turned 21, it was about as hardcore as I could think of drinking at the time, my partner Bob Weir and I went out and won the Doubles Championship
I can remember there was a banquet held a week or so after the tournament. It was such an honor to win a tournament with so many great bowlers participating. At the time Weir and I had averages around 165, so it is possible to win without bowling a 700 scratch series. Don McComas did such a nice job of coordinating the tournament and giving it a major tournament feel.
It's not as big as it once was, I guess it's up to us as loyal bowlers in Faribault to drum up interest in the sport and get people back to the bowling alley if we want to have not just the sport, but "Bowling City" to have a big time feel once again.
Best of luck to those that are participating. For those who are participating in the team competition and would like to bowl singles and doubles but cannot find a partner, join the Faribault Bowlers page on Facebook ( Faribault Bowlers Facebook Link). As the page keeps growing there will be more bowlers joining. Make a post that you're looking for a tournament partner and maybe you'll find one with someone seeing your post.
Best of luck to everyone that will be participating.
Onto the leagues and of course the Three Stars....

NOTES:
Just a reminder that this Saturday night (1-21) will be the next Moonlight Bowling session. The Holiday Moonlight Bowling had a great turnout. With schedules likely being clearer with it being the middle of January, I'm hoping to see a great turnout once again. $20 for three games with several chances to win money as the night progresses.
Hats off to the folks at PetSmart and Timberlodge Steakhouse for treating their employees to a holiday employee gathering at Faribowl. You know, it doesn't have to require a holiday or special occasion to get together with fellow employees and friends and come out and enjoy some games of bowling and great food and drink.
Last Wednesday night during league bowling, Don Clayton presented me with a Bashers hoodie as a token of appreciation for doing this blog. I deeply appreciate the recognition. I had something similar happen in St. Paul where the Saints gave me a Mark Hamburger autographed jersey in 2013 for covering the ball club. I'm usually one for staying in the background better read than heard, so I was humbled by both gestures. My true reward is hearing about how people are reading the blog, because that's who I do it for, the bowlers that are making this great game stay alive in Faribault.
On Monday, my wife bowled a career high 256, along with her excitement for her great game, she was eager to point out that it beat my high game. It got me reminiscing about bowling in Juniors and how they used to have the "I beat Earl Anthony" challenge. Earl Anthony would bowl three games that would be the standard and Junior bowlers all around had a chance to beat him with handicap and earned a patch for their bowling jersey. So for this week's video I thought I'd feature the legendary Earl Anthony winning his last PBA Championship, the ABC Masters in 1984.
