Faribault Bowling Observer- What Makes Bowling Great

This is the ninth installment of Faribault Bowling Observer. When I do my Summer work covering the American Association, it's easy to have a lead in to the blog. There is something always happening on or off the field that is worthy of a mention. Last night as I was participating in Moonlight Bowling, I was thinking of what to lead off the blog with this week. I was having what is commonly referred to as writer's block. So I'm going to go with what was David Letterman's bread and butter, the Top Ten list.

10. Unlike wearing spikes, bowling shoes last for years and they're always high fashion

9. Bowlers will never use the excuse that an umpire cheated us out of a win.

8. There is no need for performance enhancing drugs.

7. Unlike softball, you never need to have at least nine players show up to avoid a forfeit.

6. No pesky reporters badgering you for an interview.

5. Bowling balls have cool names like Hammer, Scorpion and Radical

4. You can enjoy Dinner and participate in a sport at the same time.

3. You have nobody guarding you while you bowl your frame

2. You can play a game within a game by playing poker while you bowl

1. One of the greatest bowlers around doesn't have a plain name like Justin Jefferson, we have Guppy Troup!

Notes:

Five lanes of bowlers participated in Moonlight Bowling on Saturday night. If you're not making it out, you're missing out. It's very easy to win your money back and the running commentary from Don Clayton makes it worth the $20 alone. The February date will be announced soon.

As I'm writing this, the staff at Basher's/Faribowl are enjoying their holiday party. Well deserved as the staff does a great job of maintaining the bar and bowling alley. During these times where help is hard to come by, the staff makes it work with a smile on their face. Check out their weekly dining specials on Facebook. They've really hit it out of the park with some of their weekly special items.

A reminder to please join Faribault Bowlers on Facebook. Just put in a request to be added on the Facebook page, and you'll be in. If you're already a part of it, tell your friends.

A week or so ago I saw Don Clayton approach someone that was open bowling. She was struggling to keep the ball on the lane. She was planting on the wrong foot which was cause the ball to go to the gutter. I stumbled upon this video on Facebook. In the 1950's there was a bowler, Lou Manti who was appropriately nicknamed Wrong Foot Lou Campi. Campi however found success with this unorthodox approach. Here is a video from 1956 featuring Lou Campi on Championship Bowling from 1956.

Until next time, good luck and good shooting.
